Born in 1930, Joseph Fischer was a rootless transient who left a string of murdered women behind him as he wandered across America. Jailed in Dutchess County, New York, during 1979, Fischer was charged with murdering his wife -- 28 years his senior -- when he simply tired of having her around. In custody, the drifter confessed 32 murders in all, but authorities were cautious in checking his claims. By February 1980, homicide investigators had developed positive links in three other slayings, with victim Betty Jo Gibson killed in Oklahoma, and a pair of teenagers -- Alaine Haperman and Veronica Tassielo -- stabbed to death in Norwalk, Connecticut. While Fischer's involvement in further cases remains unconfirmed, the charges filed against him were sufficient to permanently remove him from circulation. Fischer died of a heart attack in September 1991.
