On August 7, 1981, McSparen was arraigned on charges of poisoning two of her own sons at the family home in Lomax, Illinois. Nine -year-old Michael McSparen had been beyond help when he reached an Iowa City hospital on April 16, 1981, and six-year-old Stephen was pronounced dead at the same hospital two months later, on June 17. The death of a third child, in April 1979, was not regarded by investigators as suspicious, since the infant had been diagnosed with a congenital breathing disorder. Neighborhood "rumors" inspired the sheriff's investigation that led to Mildred's arrest, and the child-killer made two half-hearted suicide attempts before she was incarcerated, neither of which seriously threatened her life. No rational motive for the slayings was established. Attempted suicide on 1981/12/04, fell into coma and died years later from pneumonia
