In April, 21, 1986, detectives of Scotland Yard held a conference to examine evidence and discuss possible connections in the deaths and disappearances of sixteen children in the past eight years. The victims ranged in age from five to sixteen years, with officers reporting that at least seven cases appeared to be linked through the proximity of fairs or circuses. In several other cases, links were theorized between the homicides and streams or lakes habitually used by anglers. Identified victims of the crimes included: Genette Tate, 13, missing from Aylesbeare, in Devon, on August 19, 1978; Sean McGaun, 15, murdered on April 7, 1979; Martin Allen, 15, vanished from central London on November 5, 1979; Marion Crofts, 14, murdered at Fleet, in Hampshire, on June 9, 1981; Vishal Mehrota, 8, murdered in Putney, West London, on July 29, 1981; Susan Maxwell, 11, abducted from Coldstream on July 30, 1982, and found dead at Loxley, in Staffordshire, fifteen days later; Caroline Hogg, 5, kidnapped from Portobello, near Edinburgh, on July 5, 1983, and found dead at Twyncross, in Leicestershire, on July 15; Jason Swift, 14, murdered in Hackney, East London, on July 11, 1983; Imran Vohra, 9, killed the same afternoon at Preston, in Lancashire; Colette Aram, 16, murdered at Keyworth, in Nottinghamshire, on October 30, 1983; Lynda Mann, 15, killed in Narborough, Leicestershire, on November 21, 1983; Chris Laverack, 9, murdered in Hull on March 9, 1984; Mark Tildesley, 7, vanished from Workingham, Berkshire, on June 1, 1984; Barry Lewis, 6, murdered in Walworth, South London, on September 15, 1984; and Sarah Harper, 10, abducted from Morley, Leeds, on March 26, 1986, her violated corpse recovered from the River Trent near Wilford, Nottingham, on April 19. In early June of 1986, detectives published sketches of a suspect seen by witnesses in Morley, on the day that Sarah Harper disappeared. Described as a slender man with thinning ginger hair and silver-rimmed spectacles, the unidentified suspect was also tentatively linked with the deaths of Caroline Hogg and Susan Maxwell. In each case, police reported, the victims were abducted near their northern homes and driven south before they were discarded in the Midlands. By December, Scotland Yard was looking for a man and woman in their forties, sought for questioning in these three deaths, but suspects in the case remain elusive -- and the crimes remain unsolved.
